How to take good selfies

Woman taking a selfie by a bright window

Great selfies come down to light, lens distance and angle: more than filters.

Light

  1. Face a window: soft daylight is the most flattering light there is.
  2. Avoid overhead lights (they create eye shadows) and direct midday sun.
  3. Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) gives warm, soft light outdoors.

Lens and distance

  1. Use the back camera with a timer or mirror if you can: it’s sharper.
  2. Hold the phone further away and zoom slightly: arm’s-length wide angles stretch noses and foreheads.
  3. Keep the camera at or slightly above eye level.

Angles and expression

  1. Turn your face slightly: find your better side.
  2. Chin forward and a touch down.
  3. Relax your eyes; smile with them (“squinch”).

Background and finish

  1. Choose a clean background.
  2. Wipe the lens: smudges cause haze.
  3. Edit lightly: exposure and warmth, not face-reshaping filters.

Put your best selfie to the test: upload it, but for agencies, use proper digitals.
