Model or Not

How to pose for pictures

Photographer crouching to shoot a model in a studio

Good posing is mostly a few habits: create angles, give your hands a job, and move between shots. These work for selfies, events and modeling.

Standing poses

  1. Weight on the back leg, front knee softly bent.
  2. Turn your body 30-45° to the camera, shoulders relaxed down.
  3. Cross the front foot slightly over for a longer line.
  4. Hand in a pocket (thumb out): instantly natural.
  5. Lean lightly on a wall with one shoulder.

Sitting poses

  1. Sit on the front edge of the seat, back tall.
  2. Angle knees away from the camera.
  3. One leg extended, one bent, for floor shots.

Hands

  1. Keep hands soft: touch, don’t grab.
  2. Leave a little space between arms and body so your silhouette stays defined.

Face and expression

  1. Chin forward and slightly down: “turtle” the neck forward to define the jawline.
  2. Squinch: slightly lift the lower eyelids for a confident look.
  3. Breathe out before the shot; think of something funny for a real smile.

Movement

  1. Take small steps between frames: walk, turn, look away and back.
  2. Shoot lots and pick the best, even models keep a fraction of their frames.

Practice

Use a mirror or your phone’s burst mode. Then see how your best shot reads to strangers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look natural in photos?

Move between frames, breathe out, and give your hands something to do. Stiffness comes from holding a pose too long.
