How to take model digitals

Woman laying out instant photos on a wooden floor

Digitals (also called polaroids) are simple, unretouched photos that show agencies exactly what you look like today. They’re the single most important thing you submit.

The six standard shots

Shot How
Headshot, neutral Face the camera, relaxed mouth, hair off the face
Headshot, smiling Natural smile
Profile Turn 90°: left or right
Three-quarter Turn about 45°
Full length, front Head to toe, arms relaxed
Full length, profile Side view, standing tall

What to wear

Fitted, plain clothes in a solid color: black jeans or leggings and a fitted tank or tee. Minimal or no makeup, no jewelry, hair natural (or tied back plus one shot down).

Lighting and setting

  • Daylight, facing a window: no harsh overhead light or flash.
  • Plain, light wall behind you.
  • Camera at chest height, a friend holding the phone, or a tripod with timer.
  • No filters or editing.

Common mistakes

Heavy makeup, baggy clothes, sunglasses, busy backgrounds, selfies at arm’s length (they distort features), and old photos.
